82922 COLIN ANTHONY WEBB
Royal Australian Air Force
Colin Anthony Webb, a British expat living in Cottesloe, Western Australia, just outside of Perth, enlisted 20th February 1943 for the duration of the war into the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).
In his interviews his motivations were recorded as "Consider my qualifications as more suitable for Air Force Training". A student at his time of enlistment, he was studying Engineering at University. Although this feeling was not agreed upon with his interviewers who labelled him as "Slow" and "Sluggish". One particularly scathing comment in his medical interview stated "Reminds one of a cart horse running in the Melbourne Cup".
He was trained as a Radar Mechanic for which the RAAF attempted to recruit him post-war in 1947, as well as Aicrew V, Aircrew V (NAV), Jr. Technical and Wireless Assistant. In his examinations he passed as "Above average" - "A level headed, inpeturbak esort of chap with high educational standard. Not outstanding in other respects but quite satisfactory"
Webb's record sheet shows him moving through a number of installations during his service:
- 4RC, 5ED, 4RD, 5 STT, 1 STT, 3 STT, 4 ITS, 5 ITS, 3 AOS, 4 PD, Radar School, 2 RPP, 20 SQDM, 7 RSU, 5 RIMU, 5 PD
During his placement at 20 SQDM he participated in his one and only operational flight out to sea on 14th August 1945. His records indicate that he likely performed primarily ground service due to suffering from air-sickness. On his Navigator or Air Bomber R.A.A.F Suspension Report it reads "Unable to carry out work in the air" with a quote from the Chief Instructor "L.A.C. WEBB has suffered from air-sickness to such an extent that he has been unable to carry out his duties in the air satisfactorily. He is a most conscientious type and has been studying Engineering at University, therefore I recommend that he be remustered to some suitable category"
He was fined for "Loss of clothing" at the time of his discharge in 1946.
His records exist online in the Australian National Archives
